With any luck, Irish-bred and trained raiders will feature prominently in the Melbourne Cup overnight, and any success would be following hot on the heels of a Coolmore Stud treble at the Victoria Derby meeting at Flemington on Saturday.

Fastnet Rock sired a Group 1 double by himself as MERCHANT NAVY, somewhat appropriately, won the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes with another of his representatives, the smart filly Formality, a head and short-head away in third.

The stallion also came on top in the very tight finish to the Group 1 Myer Classic for fillies and mares as SHOALS scored.

LUVALUVA got spree going courtesy of a narrow win in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes over ten furlongs. The daughter of Mastercraftsman (IRE) is out of a Galileo (IRE) mare, so her staying credentials for the VRC Oaks later this week could not be much stronger.

It is worth mentioning that the Coolmore influence extended further as the late High Chaparral (IRE) also had a double at the same marquee meeting via ACE HIGH in the VRC Derby and the hardy CISMONTAINE who gained a slot in the Melbourne Cup for winning the Group 3 Lexus Stakes.
