JEZKI BOUNCES BACK TO FORM

02 October 2017

Yesterday at Tipperary racecourse, former Champion Hurdle winner JEZKI (IRE) squashed any speculation of retirement with a very impressive four length win in a Grade 3 hurdle at Limerick Junction. The JP McManus owned nine-year-old gelding was billed as his owner’s second-string pre-race, but ran a bright, smart and classy race over two miles under jockey Mark Walsh. JEZKI (IRE) clearly retains a high level of ability, and two miles on soft to heavy ground appears to suit him if his last win at Navan in January is anything to go by. Trainer Jessica Harrington said after the race “He did it hands and heels there and he's got that class and class will come out at the end of the day.” Bred by Gerard McGrath, JEZKI (IRE) is a son of St. Leger winner Milan who stands at Grange Stud. He is a half-brother to two Grade 1 hurdlers in Jetson (IRE) and Jered (IRE).

SAYAR (IRE) only recently made his debut over hurdles for trainer Willie Mullins and has already left quite the impression, after the four-year-old gelding took a significant jump in class in the card’s Grade 3 Novice Hurdle. Ridden by champion jockey Ruby Walsh, SAYAR (IRE) held off a challenge by the Gordon Elliot trained Morgan (IRE) to win by a clear two and three quarter lengths. By ill-fated Gilltown Stud sire Azamour (IRE), he is from the family of multiple Group 1 winner and European champion three-year-old Sendawar (IRE). SAYAR (IRE) was bought at Goffs Horses in Training Sale 2016 by Harold Kirk and Willie Mullins for €65,000. The 2017 Goffs HIT Sale renews October 24th.

Later in the evening, RATHVINDEN (IRE) blazed to glory in the Grade 3 Novice Chase to make it four wins from his last five starts. The Killian Traynor-bred favourite produced a polished display of jumping to give champion trainer Willie Mullins his second win of the day. Ridden by Ruby Walsh, the nine-year-old gelding faced little competition when turning for home and won by an extraordinary 18 lengths. By the late Heron Island (IRE), he is a half-brother to one winner, from the family of winning hurdler and Listed performer Aura About You (IRE). RATHVINDEN (IRE) sold to Willie Mullins and connections for €100,000 at Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale in 2013.
