RENE’S GIRL (IRE) landed a second consecutive Listed win in the Smarkets Lady Protectress Mares’ Chase at Huntingdon on Thursday. Pacesetter and race favourite Desert Queen made the running for the most part of the two and a half mile race. RENE’S GIRL (IRE) was settled in behind the leader but took the lead from three out. The closing stages of the race involved RENE’S GIRL (IRE) and Happy Diva (IRE) but the former stayed on gamely to score by two lengths.


The eight-year-old Michael Hanrahan-bred mare is by the late Presenting out of the Kings Theatre (IRE) mare Brogella (IRE); herself the winner of seven races including a Grade 3 Mares’ Hurdle at Punchestown. Her half-brother Swamp Fox (IRE) has won under both codes, winning a Grade 3 hurdle at Listowel and a premier handicap on the flat at Naas. The extended family includes the legendary Beef Or Salmon (IRE).


A €75,000 graduate of Tattersalls Derby Sale RENE’S GIRL (IRE) is now headed for the two-and-a-half mile Grade 1 Manifesto Novice Chase at Aintree.
