SPANISH STEPS (IRE) looked the “nice horse” Aidan O’Brien always thought he was when beating Group 1 winning stablemate Johannes Vermeer (IRE) in Thursday’s Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown. The mile and a half trip seemed key to this first Group victory for the three-year-old colt, who won his maiden impressively over nine and a half furlongs in June. Seamie Heffernan took the ride after Ryan Moore chose favourite Johannes Vermeer (IRE) and assumed the lead after two furlongs, racing two lengths clear with three furlongs to go and extended his advantage in the straight, where he raced wide. Reacting well to pressure, he stayed on well to beat the aforementioned favourite by half a length, with a further two and a half lengths back to Stellar Mass (IRE) in third.

By the great Galileo (IRE), SPANISH STEPS (IRE) is the first foal out of multiple Grade 1 winner Turbulent Descent, who comes from the family of three-time Grade 1 winner Gorgeous and Seaside Attraction. Turbulent Descent has a yearling full-brother to SPANISH STEPS (IRE).
